Reviewing products and ideas to make independent living safer and easier.

What is a hobby?  A hobby is something that you do just for the fun of it.  Unlike other pursuits, a hobby must be relaxing, enjoyable, and stress-free. Can you gear down enough to make room for a hobby in your life?

The word hobby has an old fashioned ring to it.  It brings to mind images of grandparents knitting and playing pinochle, but that isn’t all. Polls show that there are more hobbyists today than there were a half a century ago.

People who have hobbies tend to be healthier, more active, and more interesting than their peers; their interests stimulate their brains and get their bodies moving.

Revisit an old passion or research something new. When you find the right hobby you will know it. The only rule is that it has to be something that you look forward to doing.

The perfect hobby is out there. A book titled “Get A Hobby” by Tina Barseghian might help you to think outside the box. The author talks about topics ranging from African Violet Cultivation to Whittling with basic instructions on getting started. It will fire your imagination.

Do you still need some ideas? What are your friends in to?  Polls indicate that the most popular categories revolve around sports and athletics (this is fine as long as your pursuits are relaxing and fun, but if your “hobby” becomes stressful you are losing sight of the purpose). The next most popular category is Handiwork (knitting, sewing, woodworking, restoring antiques, tinkering with cars etc.) followed by reading, arts, music, cooking and gardening, but don’t limit yourself.  Every hobby teaches you something and every hobby broadens your horizons in one way or another.

Seniors with an eye to new beginnings have the time and the freedom to pursue all sorts of interests; who knows what dormant talents might emerge.

Hobbies make people feel good about themselves.
