Smart Senior

Reviewing products and ideas to make independent living safer and easier.

I don’t know about you but when September rolls around I still get an inexplicable urge to buy notebook paper and a package of #2 yellow pencils. Remember the excitement of going back to school?

New friends, new teachers and the search for answers are as relevant today as they were sixty years ago.  Whether you graduated with a GED, a diploma or a series of graduate degrees is immaterial; the love of learning lives in all of us.

Articles about preserving and boosting memory all include segments on how important it is to “keep on learning.”  When you were gainfully employed you called upon and challenged your brain every single day, but what happens now?

It is easy to get in a rut when you don’t have to problem solve on a daily basis, but how do you shake things up? Learning is the key. Certainly there is something that you want to learn more about; learning, after all, is ageless.

If buying school supplies still excites you, it may be time to go back to school.  No commitment required. You don’t have to have a reason, just a desire to learn.  As a senior you already have an extensive knowledge base built on a lifetime of your experiences. You needn’t be shy about jumping right back in. You know more than you think you do.

Educational opportunities today are available at every level. Colleges, community centers, senior centers, libraries, Elder Hostel many other Senior Programs will be happy to have you drop in, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.  Audit a college classes for low cost or free tuition. If you want to just sit there and listen and listen and listen some more, that is just fine. I am willing to bet that even classes that you thought were boring in the 50s or 60s are going to be so interesting today that you won’t be able to contain yourself. Don’t let this September “rush” pass you by…learn something new today.
