Restrictions are still in place and it is still not looking good; nothing is going to change anytime soon. Are apathy and unhealthy habits fighting to undermine all of your good intentions?
Sheltering in place has gotten old. Boredom and weight gain are taking their toll. It is time to change direction; focus more on creating a stronger and healthier you. Good health is your best asset. Occasionally your body will refuse to cooperate, but by-in-large, your health is one thing that you can control.
Good health takes more than good intentions though. Talk to your health care team and do some research; learn what you can do to take better care of yourself. Health, after all, is more than just absence of disease. Health encompasses everything about you; physically and mentally.
It’s time to get to work:
• Physical Fitness: Workout at home. Let You Tube and workout videos become your new best friends. Work out with weights, even if you have to use jugs and cans found in the pantry. Any stair step can be used for an aerobic workout. Go for a walk. Use an indoor walking video or don your mask and go outdoors…just do it!
• Good nutrition: Nix the junk food. Adhere to normal meal times and drink plenty of hydrating fluids.
• Mental activity: Keep busy. Read, listen to audios, revisit old hobbies or learn something new. Master new and exciting ways to communicate.
• Sleep well. You know the drill; regular bedtimes and not watching the news non-stop. There are many articles, complete with tips, on the importance of good sleep. Now is a good time to try them, all of them, to see what works for you.
Vulnerable groups (you know who you are) need to be especially vigilant about managing existing medical conditions. Take your medications, get enough rest, exercise, eat well…follow all of the guidelines given to you by your doctor. Instead of allowing yourself to be overwhelmed, fill your time productively, and ask what you can do to help. You are not alone.
