How safe is your bubble? A friend mentioned that a member of her little group at church had tested positive for COVID-19. She thought that hanging out with this “select group” of people that she knew was safe, but was it?
Her situation brings to mind; just who is in your bubble? Even now, nearly a year later, do you truly understand the concept of a bubble? Do you understand that each person that you let down your guard with, sick or not, lives with and interacts with other people every single day?
A Covid-19 bubble is a select few (friends or family members) that you know well enough to trust with your safety, and a bubble only works if everyone follows the rules.
People in your bubble need to:
• Observe the rules in regards to mask wearing and social distancing
• Restrict themselves to only necessary activities outside the home
• Understand that if they cheat and break the rules, even just a little, that they endanger everyone else.
Bubbles have to be exclusive. The good news is that when you are with others, inside your bubble, you do not have to wear a mask or stay six feet away. You can enjoy smiles, conversation, meals together and even hugs (sadly missing during these times of social isolation). Within the bubble, people have the freedom of not having to take precautions.
Still, you have to understand you cannot invite someone into your bubble who is in contact with people who could be infectious. I’m sorry if your favorite someone is heroically serving on the front line. You cannot visit physically, but you can and should say “thank you” every single day.
It’s a difficult decision. You want to fold your entire extended family into your bubble and hold on tight, but in this case smaller is better. Support bubbles help people feel less isolated, can be beneficial to all, and can be safe, as long as everyone follows the same rules. It is imperative that everyone in your bubble is on the same page; it only takes one slip-up to “burst your bubble.”
