For some reason, articles about winter tend to focus on seasonal affect disorders. You are probably already convinced that you have it, and perhaps you do. If so, you need to get help, but if you are like the rest of us, you might just need a new perspective.
What can you do to keep short days and long nights from getting you down? You winterized your car and get your furnace inspected every year, but have you ever thought about “winterizing “yourself?
At our age, we don’t want to rush time along. Therefore, it behooves us to think about other ways to revive our flagging spirits.
Yes, winter can be a real pain. The weather is grueling, and the self-imposed isolation is enough to make everyone a little stir crazy. Any form of travel is hazardous, and the icy ground cover makes even a walk to the mailbox a fete of agility. It is a time to think creatively.
Lest we forget; there is a reason for seasonal changes. Winter is a time of rest; to listen to the message that Mother Nature is trying to impart. For the rest of this year, and God willing the next, let’s look at winter as a time of peace, a time to grow.
Winter comes around at the same time, every year, so it isn’t exactly unexpected. Why are we always unprepared? This year let’s develop a winter strategy, a positive mindset, so to speak.
Get outside. Wear bright cheery clothing. When it is safe to do so, walk around the block, breathe deeply and look around you. Even short amounts of time spent outdoors will improve your mood, as well as your mental and physical health.
Think cozy. Get out favorite sweaters, flannel lined jeans, and warm fuzzy slippers. Brighten your house with flowers, colorful pillows, spreads and throws. Don’t forget flannel sheets and a red nightie.
Take up a new hobby, catch up on reading, and start a video exercise program. Renew acquaintances with family and friends. Write letters, make phone calls, or polish your computer skills.
Instead of dreading winter, embrace it as a time of peace; a time to renew yourself physically, mentally and spiritually.
