Reviewing products and ideas to make independent living safer and easier.

When does old become “too old?” It’s a real downer when seniors start thinking of themselves in terms of being “too old” to contribute. The fancy word is “stereotype,” but it becomes more than that when it gets into your head.
People fixate on old age to the exclusion of everything else. Instead of thinking old, let’s pay attention to what people on the 50 over 50 list are doing. Many of them are 60-70-80 and beyond. These are people who keep on going and who have refused to buy into doom and gloom.
Old age happens of course, but it’s what’s going on in your head that is the real issue. I hate it when friends start talking about the things that they can’t do, rather than enthusing about what they want to do.
Refuse to surround yourself with “old age.” Life is more than finding people to commiserate with. Be careful in your quest for companionship; never lose sight of who you really are.
It’s easier I suppose. Old age is always in the wings. It’s true that at a certain point you will experience certain physical, emotional, and social changes, but you also know how to adapt and change.
What can you do to bolster your mindset”?
Keep your mind sharp and for heaven’s sake stop talking about senior moments. Read. Read, and read some more. Keep up with current events and stop settling. Be interested and be open-minded. Focus on how to make things better right now, today.
Surround yourself with people of all ethnic groups and all ages. Listen to what is in their hearts and their minds. The generation gap needs to end with you.
Engage is a social activity. Join a club, participate in community events, or involve yourself in helping others. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and talk about what you “can” do. Challenge yourself. Stop thinking of yourself as being “too old.” Age does not dictate whether you have the ability, skill or desire to succeed.
