Time Alone
Housebound. Nothing to do. Nowhere to go. Just the thought of being stuck at home gives you itchy feet. Whether your car is in the shop, you are recovering from an illness, or extreme weather conditions are keeping you indoors, you are housebound.
Whether a few days or a week or two, time alone can seem like an eternity if you aren’t prepared.
Oh my gosh! You can’t go to the store, you can’t go to the library, you can’t meet friends for lunch, and you can’t even go for a walk. You are bored and it is making you nervous.
When we were kids, we didn’t dare complain of boredom. Mother would tell us to stop whining, or she would find something for us to do. Of course, we scurried off and found something fun to do instead.
She was right though. There are so many things to do. It is time to listen to the voice in your head and roll up your sleeves.
Think about hobbies that piqued your interest in the past. Hobbies that you embraced enthusiastically but abandoned because you didn’t have time. I’m pretty sure that you saved those balls of yarn, half-built birdhouses, scribbled notes, or cans of paint.
Take pictures of your messes. Scenes from the window, the armoire in the attic, or kitchen cabinets that need refurnishing. Plenty of things in disarray. You could repaint your bathroom, make new curtains for the kitchen, or just clean out your junk drawers.
Too much like work? Think of something more enjoyable. Catch up on letter writing, make a journal entry, research memoir writing, or dream about writing a novel.
When you are alone and no one else is around, you can do all those things you have been wanting to do. Be free, sing your heart out, dance around like a crazy man/woman and eat whatever you wish to do.
Reach out to others who are in the same boat. Consider an online course, a support group, or zoom with friends. Meditate, download exercise videos, watch a cooking show…so many things to do. Admit it, mother was right.
