Adapting (accept and adapt)
People are living longer than ever before. This is a good thing, right? Scary but exciting at the same time.
It might surprise you to know that not everyone thinks longevity is a gift. Some go so far as to say that the extra years are a curse rather than a blessing, but then you can’t please everyone.
Disgruntled seniors spend too much time focusing on “the good old days” instead of appreciating the here and now. The secret, of course, is how good they are at adapting to “newfangled” ideas. Can you get over being frustrated and accept that “new” can be a good thing?
You are either already enduring, or you are waiting with bated breath for these inevitable changes. Yes, aches, pains, wrinkles, gray hair, medical difficulties, and decreased mobility all come with aging.
You can choose to be angry and disgusted, or you can establish who is the “boss of you” and move on. You adapt. You learn how to take care of yourself, ignore all the little annoyances, and be grateful for what you can do.
Accept and adapt. You may have to modify your lifestyle a little, well, maybe a lot, but never give up. Play pickleball instead of tennis or go for a nice walk if you can’t jog. Forget doing the tango and embrace ballroom dancing. The important thing is the music in your heart.
You’ve been meaning to slow down for years. You talked about it often but could never fit it into your busy schedule. Now is the time. You get it now.
First and foremost, you need to explore your options. Think of the possibilities. Deluxe walkers, electric wheelchairs, and scooters have opened so many doors. Grab bars, ergonomic tools and gadgets, electronics, walk-in showers and tubs, are now yours for the taking. Accept. Adapt. Learn, learn, and learn some more. Senior proof both your house and your mind. Hopefully you gave thought to all this years ago, but even if you waited until, well now, it is not too late. Life is good. Please enjoy it.
