The best part of waking up is, well you know, coffee! Just think, the coffee you slurp in the morning has been around for more than 600,000 years. Forget the wheel, the first glimmer of civilization was really the cultivation of the coffee bean.
Coffee is among the most popular beverages in the world. People drink coffee to wake them up, give them an energy boost, or just because they like the taste.
For a while some people thought that regular caffeinated coffee was bad for old people. Thank goodness that was soon debunked because for many of us starting the day without coffee is unthinkable.
Unlike most “addictive” substances, studies show that a cup of “morning joe” is good for you. The benefits of coffee in the morning go way beyond just waking you up. Whether you drink it black, with milk, or as part of a social ritual, coffee is a powerful addition to your morning routine.
Here are a few of the reasons why coffee is thought to be good for you:
Coffee contains caffeine, a natural stimulant, that helps you feel more alert and awake.
Coffee improves your concentration and who doesn’t need that. I know that talking about neurotransmitters, dopamine, and norepinephrine is a little much to take in before you have your morning coffee, but you get the idea. These natural chemicals are thought to help improve your mood, your reaction time, and gasp, your cognitive function.
There is mention of increasing metabolism and weight management but by the time you reach our age you are probably more interested in how it improves focus, concentration, and mental alertness.
Real kickers are the studies that show that coffee can lower the risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons disease, and a handful of other chronic illnesses.
I love my morning coffee. Fresh beans, a great roast, and searching for the best coffee maker is the key. I am a coffee snob and proud of it. You should never settle for a mediocre cup. Find a blend that tickles your tase buds and brings a smile to your face.
