There are support groups for nearly everything, but where were they when you needed help dealing with everyday living?
You muddled along, thinking that you were fine, but were you? People didn’t air dirty laundry back in the day, so you kept things to yourself.
Some people don’t deal well on their own. By now you pretty much know that sometimes life sucks, but what if you could have shared your struggles with others.
Addiction, depression, isolation, feelings of helplessness, and even traumatic stress affect everyone, but what if they could be headed off before a downward spiral occurs?
There are issues at every age. Lagging in development, bullying, teen angst, marital problems, middle aged crisis, job stagnation, and finally the true helplessness associated with aging.
If you could have talk about these “issues” early on, you might have been able to resolve more of them. Once you speak up, denial is no longer an option. It frees you up to think about solutions.
Your goal will likely be that you want to be independent. It is a major goal at every age, and no less daunting as a senior.
Being independent isn’t as easy as one might suppose. You have been taken care of most of your life. If you now find yourself not liking the direction your life is taking, it is time to speak up.
Others, you know who they are, will want to take care of you. Be careful. Instead of nurturing your spirit of independence they, your significant others, might decide that they can make better decisions than you can.
Most seniors have the capability of remaining healthy, active and independent. There is a snag. Seniors admit, “if I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.”
That saying is followed by the realization that aging is not for the “faint of heart.” The expressions are clichés, but they are based on collective experiences. Instead of complaining you can make a point of learning new ways to foster independence.
