Smart Senior

Reviewing products and ideas to make independent living safer and easier.

Come on, you know what a healthy lifestyle is. You would have to live in a vacuum not to at least peek at a few of the articles. Every day, a new spin, a new quick fix that will revolutionize health and wellbeing.
Unfortunately, there is no quick fix. A lifestyle change is not something that happens overnight, it requires time and hard work, but it is for a good cause. A healthy lifestyle has been known to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Not to mention improved joint stability, increased range of motion, maintaining flexibility, preventing osteoporosis, improving your memory and reducing stress. This may not have meant much when you were on top of your game, but your world is a little different now.
Not everything about change has to be difficult. What if somebody told you to stop dieting and to worry less about weight loss. Seriously, drastic food-cutting, scale watching, and deprivation diets set you up for bone fractures, weak muscles, and flabby weight gain in later years, well now.
Focus more on healthy eating. Not as much fun of course but after years of deprivation, not so hard either. The downside is that seniors are notoriously picky eaters, and they still hate eating their vegetables. Kids of all ages would rather munch on cookies than carrot sticks. The good news is that researchers tell us that eggs, coffee, and chocolate aren’t as evil as we were led to believe.
Fight age with exercise. You can’t get away from this one. There isn’t a physician or a therapist alive who will tell you that being a couch potato is good for you.
Stay busy. Get out of the house and do something interesting. Love your life. You may or may not have loved your day job when you were younger, but you can make up for it now. Find something that you can be passionate about. Take a walk, write your memoirs, go back to school, get a gym membership, or be a volunteer. A healthy lifestyle could very well change your life.
